Therapeutic but Not Therapy: Using Critical Spirituality to Engage with Traumatic Experiences

Participants in critical reflection workshops and peer supervision often comment that the process feels therapeutic, enabling them to engage with challenging experiences, even although it is clearly not therapy. This reflective article explores these comments, particularly how processes of embedded spirituality can foster a deep exploration traumatic experiences undermine sense self ability act agency. While broadly defined as which gives life meaning including transcendent, ‘critical’ aspect includes influence person’s own broader social context. Using two participant examples for illustration, key aspects are identified: unearthing naming deeply held, limiting longstanding assumptions influencing who they operate. Next, understanding prevailing context generate liberating new perspectives. Asking what meaningful why given new, freeing assumptions, values beliefs experimenting ways being acting. What emerges participants come recognise depth transforms their perception experience themselves.
